MLA John Yap...

Jun 4: Debok all day do NAFFING!

Sorry, the title and sub-title of this post are a bit of an in-joke...

This morning I got up and had dorm breakfast as usual.  Today there was some kind of ground meat and vermicelli business in a lettuce leaf that was rather tasty, along with some other stuff that I can't remember at the moment haha.

I got to work on time and started debugging my mixture model, which was quite a pain, as it is written and compiled in C++, and then is called by a Ruby script, which means that even if you identify a problem early on, you cannot stop the script from continuing execution until it terminates for whatever reason.  >_<  I had to constantly keep adjusting the settings for the program to test what I wanted, just because it wouldn't respond to Ctrl+C.  I debugged the morning away, and ate lunch with Kabutoya-san and co.  He had told me once on Friday that he was going to be away on Monday, but he must have meant Sunday, as he was most definitely present.  Lunch today was Java curry, because the other available foods were expensive and small.  D:

After eating I played handiball, which was unfortunately back to 4 people a side again, which meant that I sucked enormously.  D:<  There's not really much organization of the players, and it's really, really ineffective.  Sometimes, there'll be all four players up at the net, and then someone on the other team will get the bright idea to hit the ball over them and then we lose the point.  >_<  When it's my turn to be in the back I STAY BACK THERE!  Gah!  I mean it's handiball, and thus very hard to take seriously, but it's pretty annoying when someone's crowding you and you're just like "oh my god are you up here AGAIN!?"  >_<

After lunch I debugged more.  D:  And more. And more.  I have actually run out of things to try with my program so I have resorted to trying to make it run faster for the time being until I think of something else to change.  >_<  The problem is that currently it's SAYING that it's working, but the manner in which it's behaving seems highly suspect.  It claims that it has converged after 3 iterations of the algorithm, and there's very little "diminishing returns" behaviour apparent in the output (well yeah, there are only 3 iterations!).  In the morning, when it was actually doing things wrong I could find the problem, but with this behaviour it's just like...  I have no idea what to do at the moment.  Oh well I'm adding some preprocessing, so at least it'll fail a little faster tomorrow.

Some good news though, Ko-san (the group lead) lent me a DVI->VGA cable, so now I can use as monitor at work again haha.  The tiny screen on my computer is not the greatest for coding, as it's sometimes difficult to keep everything straight in your head when you can't see much of it at one time.

Kabutoya-san had a handiball game today, but I didn't watch because I had made a "breakthrough" in my debugging (actually it just got it to its current, depressingly uninformative state) and wanted to see if it was fixed.  He didn't seem to mind when I asked him how his game went (his team won 2-0, with a score of 25-9 in the second game), so I guess cheering is not mandatory haha.

After work I came back to my dorm and ate dorm supper.  Today it was pork katsu and cabbage with daikon, carrot and konnyaku oden.  The guy who came in to eat after me turned on the television, so I got to watch a crazy Japanese game show while I ate.  On the show they had various quizzy-style games, but the one that stuck out the most for me was one which was like some kind of kanji-writing danger-safari.  The contestants would all get into a "truck" platform thing on hydraulics in front of what I assume was a greenscreen.  They would then go tearing though the CG grass (they were bug-sized, apparently) and encounter giant mushrooms wearing bibs that clearly wanted to eat them, and the only way to get past the mushroom was to write down the kanji whose reading appeared on the screen using a tablet in the truck thing.  Actually the mushroom was only level 1.  Once they did 3 kanji right, they moved onto level two which was the same with blinged-out frogs, level three, which had bumblebee mafia people, and the final stage, which had only one kanji, which was presented by some panda-warlock-necromancer thing.  >_>  I saw the guys' (plus one really frumpy woman) team go through the course (they weren't able to beat the pandamancer), but finished my dinner and didn't watch to see if the girls' team did any better.

After dinner I played some Touhou, did a towel wash and blogged.  I am going to go to bed fairly soon, because my nose was making threatening gestures at me today.

Sorry if I was blase today; work was really frustrating.  Hopefully tomorrow will go better, and if not, well then it's the weekend!  Haha.

Night all.
